The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Ali ’Imran 3:193.
Abrar in Islam
The word occurs six times in the Quran, always for the blessed: “The righteous (al-abrar) will be in bliss” (82:13; 83:22), and the believers pray: “Take our souls with the righteous” (3:193). Al-Barr, “the Most Kind”, is also one of the names of Allah (52:28).
Meaning of the name Abrar
Abrar is the plural of barr, “good, pious, kind”, from the root b-r-r of goodness and faithfulness (birr, “filial piety, kindness”). The name, a plural, thus means “the virtuous”. Ebrar is a very popular girls’ name in Turkey; Abrar is mostly masculine in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] calling to faith, [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die among the righteous.
But those who feared their Lord will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein, as accommodation from Allāh. And that which is with Allāh is best for the righteous.
