Chapter: It is disliked to delay the prayers beyond their proper times, and what a person should do if the Imam delays the prayer

Narrator:Abu Dharr

وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي عِمْرَانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ، قَالَ إِنَّ خَلِيلِي أَوْصَانِي أَنْ أَسْمَعَ وَأُطِيعَ وَإِنْ كَانَ عَبْدًا مُجَدَّعَ الأَطْرَافِ

وَأَنْ أُصَلِّيَ الصَّلاَةَ لِوَقْتِهَا ‏"‏ فَإِنْ أَدْرَكْتَ الْقَوْمَ وَقَدْ صَلَّوْا كُنْتَ قَدْ أَحْرَزْتَ صَلاَتَكَ وَإِلاَّ كَانَتْ لَكَ نَافِلَةً ‏"

Abu Dharr reported:

My friend (the Holy Prophet) bade me to hear and obey (the ruler) even if he is a slave having his feet and arms cut off, and observe prayer at its prescribed time. (And further said): It you find people having observed the prayer, you in fact saved your prayer, otherwise (if you join with them) that would be a Nafl prayer for you.

An-Nawawi — Sharh Sahih Muslim

قَوْله : ( أَوْصَانِي خَلِيلِي أَنْ أَسْمَع وَأُطِيع وَإِنْ كَانَ عَبْدًا مُجَدَّع الْأَطْرَاف ) أَيْ مُقَطَّع الْأَطْرَاف ; وَالْجَدْع : بِالدَّالِ الْمُهْمَلَة الْقَطْع , وَالْمُجَدَّع أَرْدَأ الْعَبِيد لِخِسَّتِهِ , وَقِلَّة قِيمَته وَمَنْفَعَته , وَنُفْرَة النَّاس مِنْهُ. وَفِي هَذَا : الْحَثُّ عَلَى طَاعَة وُلَاة الْأُمُور مَا لَمْ تَكُنْ مَعْصِيَة , فَإِنْ قِيلَ : كَيْف يَكُون الْعَبْد إِمَامًا , وَشَرْط الْإِمَام أَنْ يَكُون حُرًّا قُرَشِيًّا سَلِيم الْأَطْرَاف ؟ فَالْجَوَاب مِنْ وَجْهَيْنِ : أَحَدهمَا : أَنَّ هَذِهِ الشُّرُوط وَغَيْرهَا إِنَّمَا تُشْتَرَط فِيمَنْ تُعْقَد لَهُ الْإِمَامَة بِاخْتِيَارِ أَهْل الْحَلّ وَالْعَقْد , وَأَمَّا مَنْ قَهَرَ النَّاس لِشَوْكَتِهِ وَقُوَّة بَأْسه…

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me: O Abu Dharr, you would soon find after me rulers who would make their prayers dead. You should say prayer at its prescribed time. If you say prayer at its prescribed time that would be a supererogatory prayer for you, otherwise you saved your prayer.

فَصَلِّ الصَّلاَةَ لِوَقْتِهَا فَإِنْ صَلَّيْتَ لِوَقْتِهَا كَانَتْ لَكَ نَافِلَةً وَإِلاَّ كُنْتَ قَدْ أَحْرَزْتَ صَلاَتَكَ ‏"

the Prophet said: "O Abu Dharr! There will be leaders after me who cause the Salat to die; so perform the Salat during its time. If you pray (with them) during its time, then that will be voluntary Salat for you, if not, then you will have attained your Salat."

أُمَرَاءُ يَكُونُونَ بَعْدِي يُمِيتُونَ الصَّلاَةَ فَصَلِّ الصَّلاَةَ لِوَقْتِهَا فَإِنْ صُلِّيَتْ لِوَقْتِهَا كَانَتْ لَكَ نَافِلَةً وَإِلاَّ كُنْتَ قَدْ أَحْرَزْتَ صَلاَتَكَ ‏"
