حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ الْبَزَّازُ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عِيسَى، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَبْرٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم

يَتَوَضَّأُ بِإِنَاءٍ يَسَعُ رَطْلَيْنِ وَيَغْتَسِلُ بِالصَّاعِ ‏.‏

Anas reported :

The Prophet (ﷺ) performed ablution with a vessel which contained two rotls (of water) and took a bath with a sa’ (of water).1

Abu Dawud Said : This tradition has berated on the authority of Anas through a different chain. This version mentions: “He performed ablution with one makkuk. “It makes no mention of two rotls. 2

Abu Dawud said : This tradition has also been narrated by Yahya b. Adam from Sharik. But this chain mentions Ibn Jabr b. ‘Atik instead of ‘ Abd Allah b. Jabr.

Abu Dawud Said : This tradition has also been narrated by Sufyan from ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Isa. This chain mentions the name Jabr b. ‘Abd Allah instead of ‘Abd Allah b. Jabr.

Abu Dawud Said : I heard Ahmad b. Hanbal say : one sa’ measures five rotls. It was the sa’ of Ibn Abi Dhi’b and also of the Prophet (ﷺ).

( يَسَع رِطْلَيْنِ ) : مِنْ الْمَاء , وَالرِّطْل مِعْيَار يُوزَن بِهِ وَكَسْره أَشْهَرُ مِنْ فَتْحه , وَهُوَ بِالْبَغْدَادِيِّ اِثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ أُوقِيَّة , وَالْأُوقِيَّة أَسْتَار وَثُلُثَا أَسْتَار , وَالْأَسْتَار أَرْبَعَة مَثَاقِيل وَنِصْف مِثْقَال , وَالْمِثْقَال دِرْهَم وَثَلَاثَة أَسْبَاع دِرْهَم , وَالدِّرْهَم سِتَّة دَوَانِيق , وَالدَّانَق ثَمَانِي حَبَّات وَخُمُسَا حَبَّة , وَعَلَى هَذَا فَالرِّطْل تِسْعُونَ مِثْقَالًا وَهِيَ مِائَة دِرْهَم وَثَمَانِيَة وَعِشْرُونَ دِرْهَمًا وَأَرْبَعَة أَسْبَاع دِرْهَم , وَالْجَمْع أَرْطُل. وَالرِّطْل مِكْيَال أَيْضًا وَهُوَ بِالْكَسْرِ , وَبَعْضهمْ يَحْكِي فِيهِ بِالْفَتْحِ. كَذَا فِي الْمِصْبَاح ( إِلَّا أَنَّهُ ) : أَيْ شُعْبَة ( بِمَكُّوكٍ )…

Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) took the bath of Janaba (sexual relation or wet dream) he asked for the Hilab or some other scent. He used to take it in his hand, rub it first over the right side of his head and then over the left and then rub the middle of his head with both hands.

`Aisha's brother and I went to `Aisha and he asked her about the bath of the Prophet. She brought a pot containing about a Sa` of water and took a bath and poured it over her head and at that time there was a screen between her and us.

فَدَعَتْ بِإِنَاءٍ نَحْوًا مِنْ صَاعٍ، فَاغْتَسَلَتْ وَأَفَاضَتْ عَلَى رَأْسِهَا، وَبَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهَا حِجَابٌ‏.‏

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to wash himself with a sa' (of water) and perform ablution with a mudd (of water). Abu Dawud said: This tradition has also been narrated by Aban on the authority of Qatadah. In this version he said: "I herd safiyyah."

Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) took a bath with five Makkuks of water and performed ablution with one Makkuk. Ibn Muthanna has used the words five Makakiyya, and Ibn Mu'adh narrated it from 'Abdullah b. 'Abdullah and he made no mention of Ibn Jabr.
