حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، يَرْفَعُهُ قَالَ ‏"‏

لَوْلاَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ، عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِتَأْخِيرِ الْعِشَاءِ وَبِالسِّوَاكِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ ‏"

Narrated Abu Hurayrah :

(the Prophet, sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam ) as saying : Were it not that I might oeverburdern the believers, I would order them to delay the night ('isha ) prayer and use the tooth-stick at the time of every prayer.

Classical commentary

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

( يَرْفَعهُ ) : هَذِهِ مَقُولَة الْأَعْرَج , أَيْ يَقُول الْأَعْرَج : يَرْفَع أَبُو هُرَيْرَة هَذَا الْحَدِيث إِلَى النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , وَهَذِهِ صِيغَة يُكْنَى بِهَا عَنْ صَرِيح الرَّفْع فَهُوَ أَيْضًا مِنْ أَقْسَام الْمَرْفُوع الْحُكْمِيّ كَقَوْلِ التَّابِعِيّ عَنْ الصَّحَابِيّ يَرْفَع الْحَدِيث صَرَّحَ بِذَلِكَ الْحَافِظ. وَفِي صَحِيح مُسْلِم مِنْ رِوَايَة الْأَعْرَج عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَة عَنْ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ( قَالَ ) : أَيْ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ( لَوْلَا ) : مَخَافَة ( أَنْ أَشُقَّ ) : مَصْدَرِيَّة فِي مَحَلّ الرَّفْع عَلَى الِابْتِدَاء وَالْخَبَر مَحْذُوف وُجُوبًا , أَيْ لَوْلَا الْمَشَقَّة مَوْجُود ( بِتَأْخِيرِ ا…

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If I had not found it hard for my followers or the people, I would have ordered them to clean their teeth with Siwak for every prayer."

لَوْلاَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي ـ أَوْ عَلَى النَّاسِ ـ لأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ مَعَ كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ ‏"

لَوْلاَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ ‏"

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'z Zinad from al-Araj from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Were it not that I would be overburdening my community I would have ordered them to use a tooth-stick."
