حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَلِمَةَ، قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَلِيٍّ - رضى الله عنه - أَنَا وَرَجُلاَنِ رَجُلٌ مِنَّا وَرَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ - أَحْسِبُ فَبَعَثَهُمَا عَلِيٌّ - رضى الله عنه - وَجْهًا وَقَالَ إِنَّكُمَا عِلْجَانِ فَعَالِجَا عَنْ دِينِكُمَا ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَدَخَلَ الْمَخْرَجَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَدَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُ حَفْنَةً فَتَمَسَّحَ بِهَا ثُمَّ جَعَلَ يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ فَأَنْكَرُوا ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ

يَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْخَلاَءِ فَيُقْرِئُنَا الْقُرْآنَ وَيَأْكُلُ مَعَنَا اللَّحْمَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يَحْجُبُهُ - أَوْ قَالَ يَحْجُزُهُ - عَنِ الْقُرْآنِ شَىْءٌ لَيْسَ الْجَنَابَةَ

Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib:

Abdullah ibn Salamah said: I, accompanied by other two persons, one from us and the other from Banu Asad, called upon Ali. He sent them to a certain territory (on some mission) saying: You are sturdy and vigorous people; hence display your power for religion. He then stood and entered the toilet. He then came out and called for water and took a handful of it. Then he wiped (his hands) with it and began to recite the Qur'an. They were surprised at this (action).

Thereupon he said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out from the privy and taught us the Qur'an and took meat with us. Nothing prevented him; or the narrator said: Nothing prevented him from (reciting) the Qur'an except sexual defilement.

( دَخَلْت عَلَى عَلِيّ ) : بْن أَبِي طَالِب ( أَنَا وَرَجُلَانِ رَجُل مِنَّا ) : أَيْ مِنْ مُرَاد وَهُوَ أَبُو قَبِيلَة مِنْ الْيَمَن ( وَرَجُل مِنْ بَنِي أَسَد ) : وَأَسَد أَبُو قَبِيلَة مِنْ مُضَر ( أَحْسَب ) : أَيْ أَحْسَب كَوْن رَجُل مِنَّا وَالْآخَر مِنْ بَنِي أَسَد وَلَا أَتَيَقَّن بِهِ ( فَبَعَثَهُمَا عَلِيّ وَجْهًا ) : الْوَجْه وَالْجِهَة بِمَعْنًى كَذَا فِي الصِّحَاح. وَفِي الْمِصْبَاح الْوَجْه مَا يَتَوَجَّه إِلَيْهِ الْإِنْسَان مِنْ عَمَل وَغَيْره اِنْتَهَى. وَالْمَعْنَى بَعَثَهُمَا عَامِلًا أَوْ لِأَمْرٍ آخَر إِلَى جِهَة مِنْ الْمُدُن أَوْ الْقُرَى ( وَقَالَ إِنَّكُمَا عِلْجَانِ ) : تَثْنِيَة عِلْج بِفَتْحِ الْعَيْن وَسُكُون اللَّام وَكَسْر الْعَيْن وَسُكُون اللَّام وَفَتْح الْعَ…

"I came to 'Ali with two other men and he said: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to come out of the toilet and recite Qur'an, and he would eat meat with us and nothing would prevent him from (reciting) Qur'an except Janabah."

يَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْخَلاَءِ فَيَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَأْكُلُ مَعَنَا اللَّحْمَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يَحْجُبُهُ عَنِ الْقُرْآنِ شَىْءٌ لَيْسَ الْجَنَابَةَ ‏.‏

Weak Mishkat al-Masabih 460

‘Ali said, “The Prophet used to come out of the privy, recite the Qur’an to us and eat meat with us, nothing restraining him from the Qur’an but seminal defilement.” Abu Dawud and Nasa’i transmitted it, and Ibn Majah transmitted something similar.

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach us the Qur’an except when he was in a state of sexual impurity. [Reported by Ahmad and Al-Arba’a. This is the version of At-Tirmidhi who graded it Hasan (fair). And Ibn Hibban graded it Sahih (sound)].

"I entered upon 'Ali bin Abu Talib and he said: 'The Messenger of Allah used to go to the lavatory and relieve himself, then come out, and he would eat bread and meat with us and recite Qur'an, nothing stopped him' or perhaps he said: 'prevented him from doing so except sexual impurity.'"
