أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَلِمَةَ، قَالَ أَتَيْتُ عَلِيًّا أَنَا وَرَجُلاَنِ، فَقَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم

يَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْخَلاَءِ فَيَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَأْكُلُ مَعَنَا اللَّحْمَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يَحْجُبُهُ عَنِ الْقُرْآنِ شَىْءٌ لَيْسَ الْجَنَابَةَ ‏.‏

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Salimah said:

"I came to 'Ali with two other men and he said: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to come out of the toilet and recite Qur'an, and he would eat meat with us and nothing would prevent him from (reciting) Qur'an except Janabah."

قَوْله ( عَنْ عَبْد اللَّه بْن سَلِمَة ) بِكَسْرِ اللَّام. قَوْله ( لَيْسَ الْجَنَابَة ) بِالنَّصْبِ عَلَى أَنَّ لَيْسَ مِنْ أَدَوَات الِاسْتِثْنَاء وَالْمُرَاد بِعُمُومِ شَيْء مَا يَجُوز الْعَقْل فِيهِ الْقِرَاءَة مِنْ الْأَجْوَال وَإِلَّا فَحَالَة الْبَوْل وَالْغَائِط مِثْل الْجَنَابَة لَكِنَّ خُرُوجهمَا عَقْلًا أَغْنَى عَنْ الِاسْتِثْنَاء.…

‘Ali said, “The Prophet used to come out of the privy, recite the Qur’an to us and eat meat with us, nothing restraining him from the Qur’an but seminal defilement.” Abu Dawud and Nasa’i transmitted it, and Ibn Majah transmitted something similar.

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach us the Qur’an except when he was in a state of sexual impurity. [Reported by Ahmad and Al-Arba’a. This is the version of At-Tirmidhi who graded it Hasan (fair). And Ibn Hibban graded it Sahih (sound)].
