Tafsir of verse 74
Al-Mukhtasar
Besides Iblis who was too arrogant to prostrate. And through his being arrogant to the command of his Lord, he was from the disbelievers.
except Iblīs, who was arrogant and became one of the disbelievers27.
Notes
[27] This command of Allah to bow down before Adam was a test of obedience. Satan refused to comply out of arrogance for he thought he was better than Adam.
Except Iblîs (Satan): he was proud2 and was one of the disbelievers.
Notes
[2] (V.38:74): See the footnote of (V.22:9).
Saving Iblis; he was scornful and became one of the disbelievers.
Not so Iblis: he was haughty, and became one of those who reject Faith.
But not Iblis: he was proud and he was one of the unbelievers.
Except Iblis; he waxed proud, and was (one) of the disbelievers.
