Tafsir of verse 39
Al-Mukhtasar
So be patient, O Messenger, on what the Jews and others say, and pray the Fajr prayer to your Lord, praising Him before sunrise, and pray Asr before sunset.
So bear patiently [O Prophet] what they say, and glorify the praise of your Lord before sunrise and before sunset18.
Notes
[18] This and the following verse refer to the times of the five daily prayers; before the sun rises and sets (i.e., the Fajr, Zuhr, and ‘Asr prayers).
So bear with patience (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) all that they say, and glorify the Praises of your Lord, before the rising of the sun and before (its) setting (i.e. the Fajr, Zuhr, and ‘Asr prayers)5.
Notes
[5] (V.50:39).
a) Narrated Qais: Jarîr said, "We were with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and he looked at the moon on a full-moon night and said: ‘Certainly you will see your Lord as you see this moon and you will have no trouble in seeing Him. So if you can avoid missing (through sleep or business) a prayer before the sunrise (Fajr) and a prayer before sunset (‘Asr ), you must do so’. ‘He then recited Allah’s Statement:
"And glorify the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun, and before (its) setting." (V.50:39).
Ismâ‘îl said: "Offer those prayers and do not miss them." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.1, Hadîth No.529)
b) See the footnote of (V.32:16).
Therefor (O Muhammad) bear with what they say, and hymn the praise of thy Lord before the rising and before the setting of the sun;
Bear, then, with patience, all that they say, and celebrate the praises of thy Lord, before the rising of the sun and before (its) setting.
Therefore be patient of what they say, and sing the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before the setting.
So (endure) patiently what they say and extol with the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before (its) setting;
We were in the presence of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) when he looked at the moon when it was full, and he said: "You will see your Lord as you see this moon, you will not have any difficulty in seeing Him. So if you are able to not be overcome in observing a prayer…
So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.
