Tafsir of verse 39

Al-Mukhtasar

And warn the people, O Messenger, of the Day of Regret when the evildoer will regret his evil-doings and when the righteous will regret not being more obedient, when the scrolls of the servants will be wrapped, their reckoning is finished and each person goes towards what he had sent forward. But they have been deceived by their worldly life and are unmindful of the Hearafter, and they do not accept the Day of Judgment.

Other translations of verse 39

Warn them of the Day of Remorse when all matters will be decided, but they are heedless and they do not believe.

And warn them (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) of the Day of grief and regrets, when the case has been decided, while (now) they are in a state of carelessness, and they believe not7.

Notes

[7] (V.19:39) Narrated Abu Sa‘îd Al-Khudrî رضي الله عنه: Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "On the Day of Resurrection, death will be brought forward in the shape of a black and white ram. Then a call-maker will call, ‘O people of Paradise!’ Thereupon they will stretch their necks and look carefully. The caller will say, ‘Do you know this?’ They will say: ‘Yes, this is death.’ By then all of them would have seen it. Then it will be announced again, ‘O people of Hell!’ They will stretch their necks and look carefully. The caller will say, ‘Do you know this?’ They will say, ‘Yes, this is death.’ " And by then all of them would have seen it. Then it (that ram) will be slaughtered and the caller will say. ‘O people of Paradise! Eternity for you and no death. O people of Hell! Eternity for you and no death.’ Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم recited: "And warn them (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) of the Day of grief and regrets when the case has been decided, while (now) they (i.e. the people of the world) are in a state of carelessness and they believe not." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.6, Hadith No. 254).

And warn them of the Day of anguish when the case hath been decided. Now they are in a state of carelessness, and they believe not.

But warn them of the Day of Distress, when the matter will be determined: for (behold,) they are negligent and they do not believe!

And warn them of the day of intense regret, when the matter shall have been decided; and they are (now) in negligence and they do not believe.

And warn them of the Day of regret, as the Command is decreed, and they are in a state of heedlessness, and they do not believe.
