Virtues and benefits of Surah An-Nasr

Surah 110 3 verses Medinan

Surah An-Nasr announces victory and people entering Allah’s religion in crowds, and commands glorifying Allah and seeking His forgiveness. After it was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ often said “Glory and praise be to Allah; I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him”, and said in every prayer: “Glory be to You, our Lord… O Allah, forgive me.” Ibn Abbas, with Umar’s approval, saw in it a sign that his end was near.

Its virtues at a glance

  • A call to glorify Allah and seek His forgiveness often

The Prophet ﷺ said that his Lord had told him of a sign in his nation — the conquest of Mecca and people entering Islam in crowds — upon seeing which he would often say “Glory and praise be to Allah; I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him”. After it was revealed, he never prayed without saying: “Glory be to You, our Lord, and praise; O Allah, forgive me.”

    Authentic (sahih)Muslim (484) Authentic (sahih)Al-Bukhari (4967)

  • A sign that the Prophet’s ﷺ end was near

Ibn Abbas understood that it announced to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the end of his life, and Umar ibn al-Khattab agreed; reports and interpretations concur on this meaning.

    Authentic (sahih)Al-Bukhari

  • The last surah revealed in full

Ibn Abbas asked Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah: “Do you know the last surah of the Qur’an to be revealed in full?” He said: “Yes: Idha ja’a nasru-llahi wa-l-fath.” Ibn Abbas said: “You are right.”

  • A surah of the Mufassal

It belongs to the Mufassal, given to the Prophet ﷺ as an extra by which he was favoured over the other prophets, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’: “… and I was favoured with the Mufassal.”

Aishah asked the Prophet ﷺ why he so often said “Glory and praise be to Allah; I seek Allah’s forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance.” He said: “My Lord told me that I would see a sign in my nation, and that when I saw it I should say these words often. I have seen it: ‘When there comes the help of Allah and the victory’ — the conquest of Mecca — ‘and you see people entering Allah’s religion in crowds, then glorify the praise of your Lord and ask His forgiveness; indeed He ever accepts repentance.’”

Narrated by Aishah Muslim (484) Authentic (sahih) reported by Muslim

After “When there comes the help of Allah and the victory” was revealed to him, the Prophet ﷺ did not perform any prayer without saying in it: “Glory be to You, our Lord, and praise; O Allah, forgive me.”

Narrated by Aishah Al-Bukhari (4967) Authentic (sahih) reported by Al-Bukhari

هو أجل رسول الله ﷺ أعلمه له … فقال عمر: لا أعلم منها إلا ما تقول

Umar asked the elders of Badr about “When there comes the help of Allah and the victory”; some saw in it a command to praise Allah and seek His forgiveness at victory. Ibn Abbas said: “It is the end of the life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, which Allah was announcing to him.” Umar replied: “I know nothing of it other than what you say.”
