Virtues and benefits of Surah Al-Qiyamah

Surah 75 40 verses Meccan

Surah Al-Qiyamah belongs to the Mufassal, by which the Prophet ﷺ was favoured over the other prophets, and to the “matching surahs” (an-naza’ir) he recited in the night prayer: Ibn Mas’ud reports that he paired it with Al-Insan in a single rak’ah (Muslim). It is a reminder of the Day of Resurrection and a proof of the resurrection.

Its virtues at a glance

  • One of the “matching surahs” of the night prayer

Ibn Mas’ud disapproved of reciting the whole Mufassal in one rak’ah and reported that the Prophet ﷺ recited the matching surahs two by two in each rak’ah, including Al-Insan and Al-Qiyamah together in one rak’ah.

    Authentic (sahih)Muslim (822) and Abu Dawud (1396)

  • A surah of the Mufassal

It belongs to the Mufassal, the last part of the Qur’an by which the Prophet ﷺ was favoured over the other prophets, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’: “… and I was favoured with the Mufassal.”

When to recite it

  • In the night prayer, paired with Al-Insan in one rak’ah, as the Prophet ﷺ used to do

Hadiths on its virtues

Arabic text, translation, reference and authenticity grade of each hadith.

A man said to him: “I recite the Mufassal in a single rak’ah.” He replied: “Racing through it as one rattles off poetry, scattering it like poor dates? Rather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite the matching surahs (an-naza’ir) in each rak’ah… and ‘Has there come upon man’ with ‘I swear by the Day of Resurrection’ in one rak’ah.”

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas’ud Muslim (822) and Abu Dawud (1396) Authentic (sahih) narrated by Muslim

What the surah is about

  • A reminder of the Day of Resurrection and what will happen on it
  • The possibility and certainty of the resurrection, and the recompense of deeds
  • The etiquette of listening to the Revelation
  • The contrasting states of the blessed and the wretched, and the promise to the blessed that they will see Allah
  • A reminder of death, the first stage of the Hereafter

Main purpose: To show Allah’s power to resurrect His creatures and gather them on the Day of Resurrection.

About Surah Al-Qiyamah

Al-Qiyamah is a wholly Meccan surah and one of the earliest revealed in Mecca: it is the 31st in the order of revelation, sent down after Al-Qari’ah and before Al-Humazah, and the 75th in the order of the Qur’an. It dwells at length on the terrors of the Day of Resurrection and the state of people on that day, on the possibility of the resurrection and its certainty.
