Virtues and benefits of Surah Al-Muzzammil

Surah 73 20 verses Meccan

Surah Al-Muzzammil belongs to the Mufassal, by which the Prophet ﷺ was favoured over the other prophets. The Prophet ﷺ recited it in his night prayer, pairing it with Al-Muddaththir in a single rak’ah, according to the hadith of Ibn Mas’ud narrated by Muslim. It commands him to stand at night in prayer, then lightens that duty, and shows what helps in bearing the burden of the call.

Hadiths on its virtues

Arabic text, translation, reference and authenticity grade of each hadith.

A man came to him and said: “I recite the Mufassal in a single rak’ah.” He replied: “Rushing through it like poetry and scattering it like poor dates! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite similar surahs (an-naza’ir) in each rak’ah … ‘O you wrapped in garments’ and ‘O you cloaked one’ in one rak’ah …”

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas’ud Muslim (822) and Abu Dawud (1396) Authentic (sahih) authentic hadith narrated by Muslim

About Surah Al-Muzzammil

Al-Muzzammil is the 73rd surah of the Qur’an and has twenty verses. It is the third or fourth in the order of revelation: only Al-Alaq and Al-Muddaththir preceded it according to some, Al-Alaq, Nun and Al-Muddaththir according to others. Most scholars hold it to be wholly Meccan, revealed after Al-Muddaththir, when the Prophet ﷺ, back from Hira, said: “Wrap me up, wrap me up!” Addressing him as “the one wrapped up” is a mark of gentleness towards him.
