It is one of the “similar” surahs (an-naza’ir) that he paired in a single rak’ah: he recited it with ’Abasa, according to the hadith of Ibn Mas’ud narrated by Muslim, and it was among the surahs he read in the night prayer.

What the surah is about

  • The warning against cheating in measure and weight, and the reminder of the Day of Reckoning
  • The evil end of the wicked and the good end of the righteous
  • The record of the wicked’s deeds in the lowest depths, that of the righteous in the highest (’Illiyyin)
  • The idolaters’ words about the Qur’an
  • The mockery and harm the idolaters inflicted on the poor believers
  • Good news for the believers: on the Last Day they will laugh at the disbelievers, as these laughed at them

Main purpose: To warn the unjust deniers about the Day of Resurrection and give the believers good tidings of it.

About Surah Al-Mutaffifin

Al-Mutaffifin, also called “Woe to the defrauders” (Wayl lil-mutaffifin) and “At-Tatfif” (defrauding), is the 83rd surah in the order of the Qur’an and has thirty-six verses. The exegetes differ over whether it is Meccan, Medinan, or partly both. It is more likely Meccan, as it speaks clearly of the wicked and the righteous, the Last Day, the idolaters’ words about the Qur’an and the attitude of Quraysh towards the poor believers.
