It is established in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet ﷺ recited Surah Al-Jumu’ah and Surah Al-Munafiqun in the Friday prayer, so it is read in the second rak’ah. It rebukes the hypocrites, admonishes and urges charity before one’s term ends, and belongs to the Mufassal by which the Prophet ﷺ was favoured.
The Prophet ﷺ used to recite Surah Al-Jumu’ah and Surah Al-Munafiqun in the Friday prayer. Abu Hurayrah, leading the Friday prayer, recited it in the last rak’ah and said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite both of them on Friday.”
With Al-Jumu’ah the Prophet ﷺ urged the believers on; with Al-Munafiqun he rebuked the hypocrites, who gathered in large numbers for this prayer, and called them to repentance, and its ending contains admonition and encouragement to give charity.
It belongs to the Mufassal by which the Prophet ﷺ was favoured over the other prophets, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’: “… and I was favoured with the Mufassal.”

What the surah is about
A portrait of the hypocrites and their vices: lying, false oaths and cowardice
Their words exposed: “If we return to Medina, the more honourable will expel the more humble”
The prohibition of forgetting the remembrance of Allah and neglecting it
Urging the believers to obey and to spend their wealth before their term ends
Main purpose: To show the reality of the hypocrites and to warn against them.
About Surah Al-Munafiqun
Al-Munafiqun is an entirely Medinan surah of eleven verses, revealed after Al-Hajj and before Al-Mujadila. It has borne this name since the Prophet’s ﷺ time; Zayd ibn Arqam said: “In the morning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the surah of the Hypocrites.” According to the scholars who examined the question, it was revealed during the expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq, in the year 5 AH. It is so named because it exposed the hypocrites and described their vices.
