Virtues and benefits of Surah Al-Mumtahanah
No specific hadith is reported about the virtues of Surah Al-Mumtahanah; its established merit is that it belongs to the Mufassal by which the Prophet ﷺ was favoured over the other prophets. A Medinan surah, it forbids the believers to ally with Allah’s enemies, calls them to follow the example of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, and sets out the rulings on emigrant believing women and their pledge.
Its virtues at a glance
-
A surah of the Mufassal
It belongs to the Mufassal, given to the Prophet ﷺ as an extra gift by which he was favoured over the other prophets, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’: “… and I was favoured with the Mufassal.”
-
An education in sound belief
The surah offers the believers various forms of education that root sound belief in their hearts and place it above love of fathers, sons, clan and wealth; it gives them Ibrahim, peace be upon him, as an example.
What the surah is about
- The prohibition of taking Allah’s enemies as allies, and the evil end of those who do
- The call to follow Ibrahim, who disowned his people for persisting in disbelief
- The promise to reunite the believers with their relatives and restore affection through their guidance
- Permission to treat kindly the disbelievers who neither fought the Muslims nor drove them from their homes
- The rulings on believing women who emigrated after leaving their disbelieving husbands
- The command to the Prophet ﷺ to take the pledge of believing women on obedience to Allah
Main purpose: To warn the believers against taking the disbelievers as allies.
