Tafsir of verse 17
Al-Mukhtasar
To test them in that, are they thankful for Allah’s favours or are they ungrateful for them? Whoever turns away from the Qur’ān and the admonitions it contains, His Lord will enter him into a difficult punishment that he will not be able to bear.
as a test for them7. But whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord8, He will make him suffer an arduous punishment.
Notes
[7] As to whether they will be grateful for Allah's provisions or not.
[8] i.e., the Qur’an and obedience to Him.
That We might try them thereby. And whosoever turns away from the Reminder of his Lord (i.e. this Qur’ân, - and practise not its laws and orders), He will cause him to enter in a severe torment (i.e. Hell).
That We may test them thereby, and whoso turneth away from the remembrance of his Lord; He will thrust him into ever-growing torment.
"That We might try them by that (means). But if any turns away from the remembrance of his Lord, He will cause him to undergo a severe Penalty.
So that We might try them with respect to it; and whoever turns aside from the reminder of his Lord, He will make him enter into an afflicting chastisement:
That We may tempt them therein; and whoever veers away from the Remembrance of his Lord, He will insert him into a mounting torment.
Verse 17 word by word
لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْlinaftinahumThat We might test themف ت ن
And if only they had upheld [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to them from their Lord [i.e., the Qur’ān], they would have consumed [provision] from above them and from beneath their feet. Among them are a moderate [i.e., acceptable] community, but many of them - evil is that which they do.
And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allāh, We would have opened [i.e., bestowed] upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied [the messengers], so We seized them for what they were earning.
So when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We opened to them the doors of every [good] thing until, when they rejoiced in that which they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were [then] in despair.
