Virtues and benefits of Surah Al-Haqqah

Surah 69 52 verses Meccan

Surah Al-Haqqah belongs to the Mufassal by which the Prophet ﷺ was favoured over the other prophets, and to the “similar” surahs that he ﷺ paired in the night prayer: he recited it with Al-Qamar in a single rak’ah, according to the hadith of Ibn Mas’ud. With its short, awe-inspiring verses, it affirms that the Resurrection and the recompense are a truth beyond doubt.

Its virtues at a glance

  • A surah of the Mufassal

It belongs to the Mufassal, given to the Prophet ﷺ as an extra gift by which he was favoured over the other prophets, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’: “… and I was favoured with the Mufassal.”

  • One of the similar surahs recited in the night prayer

Ibn Mas’ud reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to recite the similar surahs two per rak’ah, including Al-Qamar and Al-Haqqah in a single rak’ah.

About Surah Al-Haqqah

Al-Haqqah is a purely Meccan surah, revealed after Al-Mulk and before Al-Ma’arij. Al-Alusi cites as evidence the report narrated by Imam Ahmad from Umar ibn al-Khattab: going out before he embraced Islam to accost the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he heard him begin his recitation with Al-Haqqah, marvelled at the composition of the Qur’an, and Islam entered his heart. It would thus have been revealed in the fourth or fifth year of the mission.
