Tafsir of verse 180

Al-Mukhtasar

To Allah, glory be to Him, belongs the most beautiful names which show His majesty and perfection. So use them to call on Allah when you ask for whatever you wish for. Also leave those who turn away from the truth of these names by assigning them to false dieties, or denying them, or distorting their meanings. Allah will repay those who do this with a painful punishment.

Other translations of verse 180

Allah has the Most Beautiful Names, so call upon Him by them, and leave those who deviate concerning His Names79. They will be recompensed for what they used to do.

Notes

[79] i.e., use them improperly such as calling other gods besides Allah by them, or deny them, or distort their meanings.

And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allâh14, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names. They will be requited for what they used to do.

Notes

[14] (V.7:180) Allâh has one hundred minus one Names. (i.e. 99).
Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه : Allâh has ninety-nine Names, i.e. one-hundred minus one; and whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise; and Allâh is Witr (One) and loves the ‘witr’. (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol. 8, hadîth No.419).

Allah's are the fairest names. Invoke Him by them. And leave the company of those who blaspheme His names. They will be requited what they do.

The most beautiful names belong to Allah: so call on him by them; but shun such men as use profanity in his names: for what they do, they will soon be requited.

And Allah's are the best names, therefore call on Him thereby, and leave alone those who violate the sanctity of His names; they shall be recompensed for what they did.

And to Allah (belong) the Fairest Names, so invoke Him by them, and leave behind the ones who blaspheme His Names; they will soon be recompensed (for) whatever they were doing..

  • Al-Hajj 22:46

So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.

  • Az-Zukhruf 43:36–37

And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion. …

  • Al-Baqarah 2:171

The example of those who disbelieve is like that of one who shouts at what hears nothing but calls and cries [i.e., cattle or sheep] - deaf, dumb and blind, so they do not understand.
