Uways in Islam

The Prophet ﷺ told his Companions of the coming of a man from Yemen named Uways, very devoted to his mother: “If he were to swear by Allah, Allah would fulfil his oath; ask him to seek forgiveness for you” (Muslim 2542). ʿUmar looked for him among the reinforcements from Yemen and asked him to pray for him.

Meaning of the name Uways

Uways is the diminutive of aws, which lexicographers explain as “gift” and as “wolf”; the diminutive adds a nuance of tenderness, “the little wolf”. The name is borne in memory of Uways al-Qarani, a pious man of Yemen praised by the Prophet ﷺ. Owais is common in Pakistan, Üveys in Turkey.
