إِيَاس
Iyas: meaning of the name
Boy Arabic origin Iyās
“Compensation”, what one receives in return; from aws, “a gift”
Iyas in Islam
Several Companions bore this name, such as Iyas ibn al-Bukayr, who fought at Badr with his brothers ʿAqil, Khalid and ʿAmir. The judge Iyas ibn Muʿawiya al-Muzani, grandson of the Companion Qurra ibn Iyas, was qadi of Basra under ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz; his sharpness of mind was so famous that the Arabs would say: “More intelligent than Iyas.”
Meaning of the name Iyas
Iyas belongs to the root ʾ-w-s of giving: the verb asa means “to give, to compensate”, al-aws is “the gift” and al-iyas “compensation, what one receives in return”; Ibn Manzur states that the man’s name Iyas is taken from it. It is an ancient Arabic name, of the same family as Aws and Uways. Despite the resemblance, it has nothing to do with yaʾs, “despair”, nor with Ilyas (إلياس), the name of the prophet Elijah.
