Aws in Islam
Aws ibn al-Samit, brother of ʿUbada ibn al-Samit, fought at Badr. According to the commentators, the opening verses of Surat al-Mujadila were revealed concerning his wife Khawla, who came to complain to the Prophet ﷺ after he had pronounced ẓihar against her: “Allah has heard the words of the woman who disputed with you concerning her husband” (58:1).
Meaning of the name Aws
Aws is a very old Arabic name. Al-Jawhari gives it two meanings: “gift, compensation” (asa, “to give”) and “the wolf”, adding that men were named after the wolf; its diminutive Uways also meant the wolf. The name thus evokes generosity or fierce vigour. It is the name of al-Aws, one of the two tribes of Medina, with al-Khazraj, that welcomed the Prophet ﷺ and formed the Ansar.
