By the sky and the knocker
طَارِق
Boy Arabic origin Ṭāriq
In the QuranSurah name“The one who comes by night”; the night star, name of Surah 86
The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, At-Tariq 86:1.
Surah 86, a Meccan surah, is called al-Tariq: it opens with an oath by the sky and by “the piercing star” that appears at night (86:1-3), then recalls that “there is no soul but has a guardian over it” (86:4). The word tariq occurs twice in the Quran, in these opening verses.
Tariq is the active participle of taraqa, “to strike”, hence “to knock at the door”: the tariq is the visitor who arrives at night and knocks to come in. The Quran gives this name to a star: “By the sky and the night-comer! … It is the piercing star” (86:1-3). The same root t-r-q gave tariq, “the road”. The name also owes its fame to Tariq ibn Ziyad, who crossed the strait in 711; Gibraltar takes its name from Jabal Tariq, “the mountain of Tariq”.
Yes: the word Tariq appears in the Quran 2 times, in one surah.
