The Quran places the shuhadaʾ among those Allah has favoured, “with the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous: what excellent companions!” (4:69), and says of them: “Do not think of those killed in the way of Allah as dead: they are alive with their Lord” (3:169).
Meaning of the name Shuhada
Shuhadaʾ is the plural of shahid, from the root sh-h-d of testimony (shahada): the shahid is the witness, and the one who dies in the path of Allah, so called because he bears witness to his faith with his life, or because angels attend his death according to the commentators. Şüheda is a girls’ name given in Turkey, meaning “martyrs”.
And whoever obeys Allāh and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allāh has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.
If a wound should touch you - there has already touched the [opposing] people a wound similar to it. And these days [of varying conditions] We alternate among the people so that Allāh may make evident those who believe and [may] take to Himself from among you martyrs - and Allāh does not like the wrongdoers -
And the earth will shine with the light of its Lord, and the record [of deeds] will be placed, and the prophets and the witnesses will be brought, and it will be judged between them in truth, and they will not be wronged.
