Hamza in Islam
Hamza ibn ʿAbd al-Muttalib, the Prophet’s uncle and foster brother ﷺ, converted in Mecca and became one of the first protectors of the Muslims; he was called “the lion of Allah and of His Messenger”. He was martyred at the battle of Uhud in the year 3 of the Hijra, and Muslims call him “the master of the martyrs”.
Meaning of the name Hamza
Hamza comes from the root h-m-z, which expresses strength, firmness and sharpness: the old dictionaries give hamza as a name for the lion, and also for a herb with a pungent taste. The name thus evokes vigour and courage, as its most famous bearer recalls: the Prophet’s uncle ﷺ, called “the lion of Allah”.
