Girl Arabic origin Sumayya
Female CompanionAn old diminutive from the root of height and of the sky (s-m-w); name of the first martyr of Islam
Sumayya bint Khayyat, wife of Yasir and mother of ʿAmmar, was one of the very first people to embrace Islam in Mecca. Persecuted with her family by Quraysh, she refused to renounce her faith and was killed by Abu Jahl: she is the first martyr of Islam.
Sumayya is an old Arabic diminutive formed on the root s-m-w, which expresses elevation and gives samaʾ, “the sky”, and samiyy, “high, eminent”. It is the form taken by the diminutive of samaʾ, and the name is often understood as “exalted, of high rank”, with the affectionate nuance of the diminutive; the dictionaries do not fix its exact meaning. The name owes its popularity to Sumayya, mother of ʿAmmar ibn Yasir. In English it is also written Sumayyah or Sumaya.
The name Sumayyah does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (س م و) occurs 381 times. Examples:
And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.
And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with lamps [i.e., stars] and have made [from] them what is thrown at the devils and have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze.
