The word is not in the Quran. The Prophet ﷺ recalled that nobility places no one above the law: “Those before you perished because when a noble person (al-sharif) among them stole, they let him go, and when a weak one stole, they applied the punishment to him” (al-Bukhari 3475).
Meaning of the name Sharif
Sharif comes from the root sh-r-f of height and honour (sharaf): a noble man of high rank. The title sharif (plural ashraf, shurafaʾ) has been given to the descendants of the Prophet ﷺ through al-Hasan and al-Husayn, notably in Morocco and the Hejaz. The name is Chérif in the Maghreb, Şerif in Turkey.
