The word amir is not in the Quran, but its root is: “Obey Allah, obey the Messenger and those in authority (uli al-amr) among you” (4:59). The Prophet ﷺ said: “Each of you is a shepherd responsible for his flock: the amir over the people is a shepherd, and he is responsible for them” (al-Bukhari 2554).
Meaning of the name Amir
Amir comes from the root ʾ-m-r of order and command (amr): one who holds authority, a prince, governor or army commander. ʿUmar was the first to be called Amir al-muʾminin, “commander of the believers”. Emir is one of the most popular boys’ names in Turkey and Bosnia; it should be confused neither with ʿAmir (عامر) nor with Amin.

Indeed, your Lord is Allāh, who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne, arranging the matter [of His creation]. There is no intercessor except after His permission. That is Allāh, your Lord, so worship Him. Then will you not remember?
