Sara, wife of Ibrahim, is not named in the Quran, which tells how the angels announced to her, despite her great age, the birth of Ishaq and then Yaʿqub (11:71-72). Ibrahim told her: “O Sara, there is no believer on the face of the earth but you and me”, and Allah protected her from a tyrant who wanted to seize her (al-Bukhari 3358).
Meaning of the name Sarah
Sara is the Arabic form of the Hebrew Sarah, “princess, noble lady”, the name of the wife of Ibrahim and mother of Ishaq. It is not an Arabic word; it is sometimes linked with sarra, “she who gladdens” (from the root s-r-r of joy), but this is only a resemblance. Shared by the three Abrahamic religions, the name is one of the most widely given in the world, as Sarah, Sara, Sare or Sarra.
