The Prophet ﷺ said: “In Paradise there is a gate called al-Rayyan, through which those who fast will enter on the Day of Resurrection; none but them will enter through it” (al-Bukhari 1896). Commentators link its name to the thirst endured by those who fast, which Paradise quenches.
Meaning of the name Rayyan
Rayyan is the intensive form of the root r-w-y of watering (riyy, “abundance of water”): one who has drunk his fill, refreshed, the opposite of ʿatshan, “thirsty”. The name owes its popularity to the gate of Paradise called al-Rayyan. It is one of the most popular boys’ names in France; English Ryan, of Irish origin, is a different name.
