Arwa in Islam
Arwa bint ʿAbd al-Muttalib, a paternal aunt of the Prophet ﷺ, was the mother of Tulayb ibn ʿUmayr, one of the first Muslims of Mecca; several historians report that she embraced Islam herself. Arwa bint Kurayz, daughter of another aunt of the Prophet ﷺ, Umm Hakim al-Baydaʾ, was the mother of the caliph ʿUthman ibn ʿAffan.
Meaning of the name Arwa
Arwa is an old Arabic name. Lexicographers from al-Jawhari to Ibn Manzur explain that the urwiyya is the female ibex, the wild goat of the mountains, and that arwa denotes these goats in large numbers; they also note that Arwa is a woman’s name. The animal, nimble and sure-footed on the heights, evokes ease and grace. The meaning “gentle, kind” sometimes given has no support in the dictionaries.
