The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Hud 11:78.
Rashid in Islam
The word occurs three times in the Quran, in Surah Hud: Lut cries out “Is there not among you a sensible man (rashid)?” (11:78); Shuʿayb’s people mockingly tell him “You are indeed the forbearing, the sensible!” (11:87); and “Pharaoh’s command was not sound” (11:97). None of these verses is direct praise; the name draws its value from its meaning.
Meaning of the name Rashid
Rashid comes from the root r-sh-d of uprightness and right direction (rushd, “maturity, good sense”): the rashid is one who is rightly guided and judges wisely, and also one who guides. Al-Rashid appears in the list of the 99 names of Allah transmitted by al-Tirmidhi. A very common masculine name in the Maghreb (Rachid) and the Gulf.
And his people came hastening to him, and before [this] they had been doing evil deeds. He said, "O my people, these are my daughters; they are purer for you. So fear Allāh and do not disgrace me concerning my guests. Is there not among you a man of reason?"
They said, "O Shuʿayb, does your prayer [i.e., religion] command you that we should leave what our fathers worship or not do with our wealth what we please? Indeed, you are the forbearing, the discerning!"
