The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Ar-Ra’d 13:13.
Raad in Islam
Surah 13, al-Raʿd, bears this name because of the verse: “The thunder glorifies His praise, and so do the angels, in awe of Him” (13:13). The word also occurs in 2:19.
Raʿd is thunder, the rumble that accompanies a storm (root r-ʿ-d, that of trembling). The name evokes strength and the coming of beneficial rain. It is given in Iraq, Syria, Jordan and the Gulf. Surah 13 bears this name.
And the thunder exalts [Allāh] with praise of Him - and the angels [as well] from fear of Him - and He sends thunderbolts and strikes therewith whom He wills while they dispute about Allāh; and He is severe in assault.
Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allāh is encompassing of the disbelievers.
