مِعْرَاج
Boy Arabic origin Miʿrāj
“Ladder, ascent”: the Prophet’s ﷺ ascension through the heavens
The word miʿraj is not in the Quran, but its plural maʿarij gives its name to Surah 70: Allah is “Lord of the ways of ascent (dhi al-maʿarij), by which the angels and the Spirit ascend” (70:3-4). The Prophet ﷺ described his ascension, from heaven to heaven up to the Lote Tree of the utmost boundary (al-Bukhari 3207).
Miʿraj comes from the root ʿ-r-j, “to ascend, to rise”: the means by which one ascends, a ladder, and by extension the ascent itself. The word refers to the Prophet’s ﷺ ascension through the seven heavens on the night of the night journey (israʾ), during which the five prayers were prescribed. Miraç is a boys’ name in Turkey, Meraj in South Asia.
The name Miraj does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (ع ر ج) occurs 9 times. Examples:
