The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, At-Tawbah 9:112.
Hamid in Islam
The word occurs once in the Quran, in the plural, among the qualities of the believers: “those who repent, who worship, who praise (al-hamidun)…” (9:112). Hamid is not a name of the Prophet ﷺ, but it belongs to the same family as Muhammad and Ahmad, his names drawn from praise: Hamid is the one who praises, Muhammad the one who is praised again and again.
Meaning of the name Hamid
Hamid is the active participle of ḥamida, “to praise, to thank” (root ḥ-m-d of praise, ḥamd): “the one who praises”. It should not be confused with Hamid (Ḥamīd), “praiseworthy”, often spelled the same way in Latin letters but a different word and one of the names of Allah (al-Hamid). The great scholar al-Ghazali bore the kunya Abu Hamid. In Turkish the name is spelled Hamit.
[Such believers are] the repentant, the worshippers, the praisers [of Allāh], the travelers [for His cause], those who bow and prostrate [in prayer], those who enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and those who observe the limits [set by] Allāh. And give good tidings to the believers.
