ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ٢
[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the worlds -
حَمَد
Boy Arabic origin Ḥamad
“Praise”, a synonym of hamd
The form hamad is not in the Quran, but praise (al-hamd) opens its first surah: “Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds” (1:2), and several surahs begin with these words (34:1, 35:1). The name shares its root with the names of the Prophet ﷺ, Muhammad and Ahmad.
Hamad is a verbal noun of hamida, “to praise”, a synonym of hamd (root h-m-d, that of Muhammad, Ahmad and Mahmud): praise, thanks. It is a traditional Gulf name, widely borne in Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. It should not be confused with Hamid, “one who praises”, or Hamid with a long i, “praiseworthy”.
The name Hamad does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (ح م د) occurs 68 times. Examples:
