Pharaoh’s wife, whom tradition names Asiya, took in the child Musa: “He will be a comfort to my eyes and yours; do not kill him” (28:9). The Quran sets her as an example for the believers through her prayer: “My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise” (66:11). The Prophet ﷺ counted her, with Maryam, among the women who attained perfection (al-Bukhari 3411).
Meaning of the name Asiya
Asiya is the name tradition gives to Pharaoh’s wife, whom the Quran does not name; the early dictionaries, from al-Khalil onwards, record it as such. In Arabic the word belongs to the root ʾ-s-w: lexicographers give asiya the sense of “pillar, solid structure”, and al-asi is the physician, the one who dresses wounds; the same root gives uswa, “model, example”. Her original name is unknown. Assia is the usual form in the Maghreb.
