Al-Yasaʿ is the Arabic form of the Hebrew Elishaʿ (Elisha), “my God is salvation” or “God has saved”. The article al- is part of the name, and some Quran readers, such as Hamza and al-Kisaʾi, read it al-Laysaʿ. It is not an Arabic word. The name is rare, except in Turkey, where Elyesa is fairly common.
