عَدِيّ
Boy Arabic origin ʿAdī
Companion“Those who rush first into the attack”; an ancient Arab tribal name
ʿAdi ibn Hatim, son of Hatim al-Taʾi, whose generosity became proverbial, was a Christian when he came to the Prophet ﷺ and embraced Islam. The Prophet ﷺ told him that a woman would travel alone from al-Hira to the Kaʿba fearing no one but Allah; ʿAdi later testified: “I saw that woman… and I was among those who opened the treasures of Chosroes” (al-Bukhari 3595).
ʿAdi comes from the root ʿ-d-w of running (ʿadw): Ibn Sida defines al-ʿadi as a troop running into battle, and as “the first of the footmen to charge”. It is also a very old tribal name: the Banu ʿAdi of Quraysh were the clan of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab. It should not be confused with ʿUdayy (عُدَيّ), a different name, often written Uday.
The name Adi does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (ع د و) occurs 106 times. Examples:

Then We sent after him messengers to their peoples, and they came to them with clear proofs. But they were not to believe in that which they had denied before. Thus We seal over the hearts of the transgressors.

And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and enmity until, when drowning overtook him, he said, "I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims."
