The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Al-Baqarah 2:31.
Adam in Islam
Adam is the father of mankind, whom Muslims count as the first prophet. Allah “taught Adam all the names” (2:31) and commanded the angels to prostrate before him (2:34). His name occurs 25 times in the Quran, several of them in the phrase “the children of Adam” (17:70). The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah created Adam from a handful taken from all the earth, so the children of Adam came according to the earth” (Abu Dawud 4693).
Meaning of the name Adam
Adam is the name the Bible and the Quran give to the first man. In Hebrew ʾadam means “man, mankind”, and Genesis links it to ʾadamah, “the ground” from which he was taken. Muslim scholars express the same idea in Arabic terms: according to Ibn ʿAbbas and Saʿid ibn Jubayr, he was so called because he was created from adim al-ard, the surface of the earth; others connect it with udma, a brown complexion. Short and ancient, the name is widely given today in Europe as well as in the Muslim world.
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.
And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.
