The Prophet ﷺ said: “The most beloved of your names to Allah are ʿAbd Allah and ʿAbd al-Rahman” (Muslim 2132), and scholars add to them all names formed on a name of Allah. The name al-Wakil occurs 13 times in the Quran; its page in the 99 Names section gives its meaning and verses.
ʿAbd al-Wakil joins ʿabd with al-Wakil, from the root w-k-l of trust and reliance (tawakkul): the One to whom one entrusts one’s affairs and who is sufficient. Tried believers say: “Allah is sufficient for us, and how excellent a Trustee!” (3:173). A rare name.
Those to whom people [i.e., hypocrites] said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allāh, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."
And they say, "[We pledge] obedience." But when they leave you, a group of them spend the night determining to do other than what you say. But Allāh records what they plan by night. So leave them alone and rely upon Allāh. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.
