The Prophet ﷺ said: “The most beloved of your names to Allah are ʿAbd Allah and ʿAbd al-Rahman” (Muslim 2132), and scholars add to them all names formed on a name of Allah. The name al-Wahhab occurs 3 times in the Quran; its page in the 99 Names section gives its meaning and verses.
ʿAbd al-Wahhab joins ʿabd with al-Wahhab, an intensive form of the root w-h-b of free giving: the One who gives endlessly, expecting nothing in return. The Quran reports the prayer of Sulayman: “Grant me a kingdom… You are the Bestower” (38:35). It is written Abdelwahab in the Maghreb and Abdülvahap in Turkey.
