Umrah: the step-by-step guide

Umrah takes a few hours: ihram at the miqat, seven circuits around the Kaaba, two units of prayer, seven laps between Safa and Marwah, then shaving or shortening the hair. Follow it here step by step, before you travel or on site: every supplication can be played and the circuits are counted for you.

  • 2 to 4 hours on site, depending on the crowd
  • 7 steps
The courtyard of the Sacred Mosque, the Kaaba and the galleries
  1. At home

    Before you leave

Umrah needs some preparation: a sincere intention, valid documents, good health and a few supplications to know.

    What I do

    1. Make your intention sincere: perform Umrah for Allah alone, repent, settle your debts and ask forgiveness of anyone you have wronged.
    2. Check your visa or permit, booking, insurance and the meningitis vaccination required by Saudi Arabia.
    3. Learn the talbiyah and the steps of Umrah; pack your ihram garments in your hand luggage.
    4. When you set off, recite the travel supplication.

    What I say

    For travel

Allahu akbar, allahu akbar, allahu akbar. subhan al-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinina wa inna ila rabbina la-munqalibun. Allahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina hadha l-birra wa t-taqwa wa min al-‘amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin ‘alayna safarana hadha wa twi ‘anna bu‘dah. Allahumma anta s-sahibu fi-s-safar, wa l-khalifatu fi-l-ahl. Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika min wa‘tha’i s-safar, wa ka’abati l-manzar, wa su’i l-munqalab, fi-l-mali wa l-ahl Ayibuna ta’ibuna ‘abidun, li-rabbina hamidun

(Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, How perfect He is, The One Who has placed this (transport) at our service, and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny. O Allah, we ask You for birr and taqwa in this journey of ours, and we ask You for deeds which please You. O Allah, facilitate our journey and let us cover it’s distance quickly. O Allah, You are The Companion on the journey and The Successor over the family, O Allah, I take refuge with You from the difficulties of travel, from having a change of hearts and being in a bad predicament, and I take refuge in You from an ill fated outcome with wealth and family.)(birr and taqwa: two comprehensive terms which individually, refer to all good actions and obedience i.e. performing the commanded actions and avoiding the prohibited actions. When combined together, birr refers to doing those actions which have been commanded and taqwa refers to avoiding those actions which have been prohibited.)(A successor: one who succeeds another due to the latter’s absence or death. This is the correct meaning of the word khaleefah; thus, it is incorrect to believe that Adam is the khaleefah (vicegerent, as is commonly translated) of Allah on earth because Allah is never absent, and will never die. This supplication proves the correct understanding of this term and shows that Allah succeeds us and guards whom we leave behind when we die or are absent.)(upon returning the same supplication is recited with the following addition: (We return, repent, worship and praise our Lord.))

When mounting an animal or any means of transport

Bismi l-lah. al-hamdu li-l-lah. subhan al-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinina wa inna ila rabbina la-munqalibun. al-hamdu li-l-lah, al-hamdu li-l-lah, al-hamdu li-l-lah. allahu akbar, allahu akbar, allahu akbar. subhanaka l-lahumma inni zalamtu nafsi, fa-ghfir-li fa-innahu la yaghfiru dh-dhunuba illa ant

In the name of Allah and all praise is for Allah. How perfect He is, the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny. All praise is for Allah, All praise is for Allah, All praise is for Allah, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. How perfect You are, O Allah, verily I have wronged my soul, so forgive me, for surely none can forgive sins except You.

Tip: Open this guide on your phone before you leave: it remembers the step you are on and switches to a large on-site view.

  2. At the miqat, before passing it

    Ihram at the miqat

Two pilgrims wearing the two white sheets of ihram

Before passing the miqat, you enter the sacred state (ihram): wash, put on the garments, make the intention, then say the talbiyah.

    What I do

    1. Take a full bath (recommended) and trim nails and hair if needed; men apply perfume to the body, never to the garments.
    2. Men: two unstitched sheets (one around the waist, one over the shoulders) and sandals, head uncovered. Women: their usual loose, modest clothes, without niqab or gloves.
    3. Preferably enter ihram after a prayer.
    4. Make the intention for Umrah: “Labbayka ʿumratan” (Here I am, for Umrah).
    5. Recite the talbiyah — aloud for men, quietly for women — and repeat it often until you begin the tawaf.
    6. By plane: get ready before boarding and make the intention before flying over the miqat (the crew often announces it 20 to 40 minutes before Jeddah).

    What I say

And complete the ḥajj and ʿumrah for Allāh. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever performs ʿumrah [during the ḥajj months] followed by ḥajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] - then a fast of three days during ḥajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Ḥarām. And fear Allāh and know that Allāh is severe in penalty.

    Al-Baqarah 2:196

The Talbiya for the one doing Hajj or 'Umrah

Here I am O Allah, (in response to Your call), here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise, grace and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.

    Women, schools, mistakes and references
    For women
A woman who is menstruating or in post-natal bleeding enters ihram like everyone else (including the bath); she does everything except the tawaf, which she performs once she is pure.
    If you make a mistake
Passing the miqat without ihram when you intend Umrah: you must go back to the miqat to enter ihram there; otherwise, according to most scholars, a sacrifice (dam) is due. From the moment of intention, the prohibitions of ihram apply.
    According to the schools
Two units of prayer specific to ihram are recommended in the four schools; some scholars (including Ibn Taymiyyah) hold that there is no specific prayer and that one enters ihram after an obligatory prayer.

  3. Makkah, al-Masjid al-Haram

Entering Makkah and the Sacred Mosque

A monumental gate of the Sacred Mosque in Makkah

On arrival in Makkah, go straight to the Sacred Mosque if you can, continuing the talbiyah.

    What I do

    1. Leave your bags at the hotel, then go to the Sacred Mosque in a state of wudu.
    2. Enter with your right foot, reciting the supplication for entering the mosque.
    3. Keep saying the talbiyah until you begin the tawaf.
    4. Put your shoes in a small bag and note the name and number of the gate you entered.

    What I say

Upon entering a town or village

Allahumma rabba s-samawati s-sab‘i wa ma azlaln, wa rabba l-ardin as-sab‘i wa ma aqlaln, wa rabba sh-shayatini wa ma adlaln, wa rabba r-riyahi wa ma dharayn. as’aluka khayra hadhihi l-qaryati wa khayra ahliha wa khayra ma fiha, wa a‘udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha wa sharri ma fiha

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all that they envelop, Lord of the seven earths and all that they carry, Lord of the devils and all whom they misguide, Lord of the winds and all whom they whisk away. I ask You for the goodness of this village, the goodness of its inhabitants and for all the goodness found within it and I take refuge with You from the evil of this village, the evil of its inhabitants and from all the evil found within it.

    Upon entering the mosque

    A‘udhu bi-l-lahi l-‘azim, wa bi-wajhihi l-karim, wa sultanihi l-qadim, min ash-shaytani r-rajim. bismi l-lah, wa s-salatu wa s-salamu ‘ala rasuli l-lah. Allahumma ftah-li abwaba rahmatik

I take refuge with Allah, The Supreme and with His Noble Face, and His eternal authority from the accursed devil. In the name of Allah, and prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, open the gates of Your mercy for me.

Tip: The gates look alike: note your gate (for example “King Abdulaziz Gate, No. 1”) and agree on a meeting point with your companions in case you get separated.

  4. Around the Kaaba

Tawaf: seven circuits around the Kaaba

Pilgrims circling the Kaaba during tawaf, in the courtyard of the Sacred Mosque

You walk seven times around the Kaaba, starting and ending at the Black Stone, with the Kaaba on your left.

    What I do

    1. Be in a state of wudu.
    2. Men: uncover the right shoulder (the upper sheet passes under the right armpit) for this whole tawaf.
    3. Start in line with the Black Stone (a green light on the wall opposite marks the starting line).
    4. Touch and kiss the Stone if you can do so without pushing; otherwise touch it with your hand, or point to it from afar with your right hand, saying “Allahu akbar”.
    5. Go around seven times with the Kaaba on your left, passing outside the Hijr (the semicircular wall).
    6. Men: walk briskly during the first three circuits if the crowd allows.
    7. Touch the Yemeni corner if you can reach it, without kissing it or pointing to it from afar.
    8. Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone, say: “Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ʿadhaban-nar”.
    9. The rest of the time, make any supplication in your own language or recite the Quran: there is no fixed formula for each circuit.

    What I say

The Takbîr passing the black stone

    Allahu akbar

The Prophet circled the Kaʿbah on a camel, every time he reached the black stone he would point to it with his staff and say: (Allah is the greatest)

Between the Yemeni corner and the black stone

Rabbana atina fi-d-dunya hasanatan wa fi-l-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhaba n-nar

The Prophet PBUH used to say between the Yemeni corner and the black stone: (O our Lord, grant us the best in this life and the best in the next life, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.)

    Women, schools, mistakes and references
    For women
No brisk walking and no uncovered shoulder; keep away from the crowd of men. During menstruation or post-natal bleeding: no tawaf until she is pure.
    If you make a mistake
If unsure of the number of circuits, go by the lower number. A circuit passing inside the Hijr does not count. Do not push or jostle to reach the Black Stone: pointing to it is enough.
    According to the schools
Wudu: a condition of tawaf for the Malikis, Shafiʿis and Hanbalis; an obligation (not a condition) for the Hanafis, for whom a tawaf without wudu is valid but must be compensated. Losing wudu during tawaf: renew it, then start again from the beginning (Malikis, Hanbalis) or continue where you stopped (Shafiʿis, Hanafis).

  5. Behind the Station of Ibrahim

Two units of prayer, then Zamzam water

The Station of Ibrahim, a small golden structure in front of the Kaaba

After the tawaf, pray two units behind the Station of Ibrahim, then drink Zamzam water.

    What I do

    1. Cover the right shoulder again.
    2. While walking to the Station of Ibrahim, recite: “Wattakhidhu min maqami Ibrahima musalla” (Quran 2:125).
    3. Pray two units behind it if possible, otherwise anywhere in the mosque; preferably recite surah al-Kafirun then al-Ikhlas.
    4. Drink Zamzam water (fountains and containers throughout the mosque) while supplicating.
    5. Return to touch the Black Stone if it is easy (recommended), then head for Safa.

    What I say

And [mention] when We made the House [i.e., the Kaʿbah] a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], "Purify My House for those who perform ṭawāf and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer]."

    Al-Baqarah 2:125

Tip: In the crowd, do not insist on praying right behind the Station: anywhere in the mosque is fine, and you avoid blocking those doing tawaf.

  6. The Safa–Marwah gallery

Saʿi: seven laps between Safa and Marwah

The saʿi gallery between Safa and Marwah, pilgrims in ihram

You walk seven laps between the hills of Safa and Marwah, starting at Safa and ending at Marwah.

    What I do

    1. Approaching Safa (on the first lap only), recite: “Inna s-Safa wal-Marwata min shaʿa’iri llah” (Quran 2:158), then “Abda’u bima bada’a llahu bih”.
    2. Climb Safa, face the Kaaba, raise your hands, say “Allahu akbar” three times and the dhikr of the Prophet ﷺ, then supplicate; do this three times.
    3. Walk towards Marwah; men run between the two green markers.
    4. On Marwah, do as on Safa. Safa → Marwah counts as one lap and Marwah → Safa as another; the seventh ends at Marwah.
    5. Supplicate freely during the laps; there is no fixed formula for each lap.

    What I say

Indeed, aṣ-Ṣafā and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allāh. So whoever makes ḥajj [pilgrimage] to the House or performs ʿumrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good - then indeed, Allāh is Appreciative and Knowing.

    Al-Baqarah 2:158

When at Mount Safa and Mount Marwah

Inna s-safa wa l-marwata min sha‘a’iri l-lah. abda’u bima bada’a l-lahu bih La ilaha illa l-lah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu l-mulku wa lahu l-hamd, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir. la ilaha illa l-lah wahdah. anjaza wa‘dah, wa nasara ‘abdah, wa hazama l-ahzaba wahdah

(Jabir said when describing the Prophet’s pilgrimage: ‘…and when he approached mount Safa he recited: (Indeed Safa and Marwah are from the places of worship of Allah…) (I begin with what Allah began with.) so he started with Safa and climed it until he could see the Kaʿbah, he then faced it and said: (Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest.) and then he would say the following three times making a supplication (one should make a personal supplication) after each time: (None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise and He is over all things amnipotent. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, aided His Servant and single-handedly defeated the allies.)) (he would repeat this action at Marwah.)

    For women
No running between the green markers.
    If you make a mistake
Starting at Marwah: that lap does not count. If unsure of the number, go by the lower one. Tired or ill: wheelchairs and the upper floors are allowed.
    According to the schools
Saʿi is a pillar of Umrah for the Malikis, Shafiʿis and Hanbalis, and an obligation for the Hanafis. Wudu is recommended for it, not required.

  7. After the saʿi

Shaving or shortening the hair: the end of Umrah

Men shave their head or shorten their hair; women cut a fingertip’s length. Umrah is complete.

    What I do

    1. Men: shave the head (best) or shorten the hair of the whole head.
    2. Women: gather the hair and cut about a fingertip’s length (around 2 cm) from the ends.
    3. Umrah is complete: all the prohibitions of ihram are lifted.
    4. Hajj tamattuʿ in the same season: shortening now lets you shave at the Hajj.

    What I say

Certainly has Allāh showed to His Messenger the vision [i.e., dream] in truth. You will surely enter al-Masjid al-Ḥarām, if Allāh wills, in safety, with your heads shaved and [hair] shortened, not fearing [anyone]. He knew what you did not know and has arranged before that a conquest near [at hand].

Shortening: the whole head for the Malikis and Hanbalis, at least a quarter for the Hanafis, three hairs are enough for the Shafiʿis.

  8. Madinah, the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ optional

    Visiting Madinah (optional)

The Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah and its green dome

Visiting Madinah is not part of Umrah, but many pilgrims go there to pray in the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ.

    What I do

    1. Pray in the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ: a prayer there is better than a thousand elsewhere, except in the Sacred Mosque.
    2. Greet the Prophet ﷺ, then Abu Bakr and ʿUmar, respectfully and without raising your voice.
    3. Pray in the Rawdah with the permit issued by the official Nusuk app.
    4. Pray at Quba Mosque (a prayer there equals an Umrah); visit al-Baqiʿ cemetery and Mount Uhud, greeting those buried there.
    Women, schools, mistakes and references
    For women
Women have dedicated times for the Rawdah, booked the same way.
