حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ أُمِّ الْحَسَنِ الْبَصْرِيِّ، أَنَّ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ، حَدَّثَتْهُمْ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم

شَبَّرَ لِفَاطِمَةَ شِبْرًا مِنْ نِطَاقِهَا ‏.‏

Narrated Umm Salamah:

"The Prophet (ﷺ) slackened Fatimah's garment a hand-span."

[Abu 'Eisa said:] Some of them reported it from Hammad bin Salamah, from 'Ali bin Zaid, from Al-Hasan, from his father, from Umm Salamah.

قَوْلُهُ : ( عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ) هُوَ مَعْرُوفٌ بِعَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ جُدْعَانَ ضَعِيفٌ مِنْ الرَّابِعَةِ كَذَا فِي التَّقْرِيبِ. قُلْتُ : وَقَالَ التِّرْمِذِيُّ : صَدُوقٌ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ رُبَّمَا رَفَعَ الشَّيْءَ الَّذِي يُوقِفُهُ غَيْرُهُ. يَرْوِي عَنْ الْحَسَنِ الْبَصْرِيِّ وَأُمِّهِ خَيْرَةَ وَخَلْقٍ ( عَنْ أُمِّ الْحَسَنِ ) الْحَسَنُ هَذَا هُوَ الْبَصْرِيُّ وَاسْمُ أُمِّهِ خِيَرَةُ. قَالَ فِي التَّقْرِيبِ : خِيَرَةُ أُمُّ الْحَسَنِ الْبَصْرِيِّ مَوْلَاةُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ مَقْبُولَةٌ مِنْ الثَّانِيَةِ ( شَبَّرَ ) مِنْ التَّشْبِيرِ. قَالَ فِي الْقَامُوسِ : شبر تَشْبِيرًا قَدَّرَ ( لِفَاطِمَةَ شِبْرًا ) بِكَسْرِ الشِّينِ هُوَ مَا بَيْنَ أَعْلَى الْإِبْهَامِ وَأَعْلَى الْخِنْصَرِ (…

When the Prophet [SAW] said what he said about the Izar, Umm Salamah said: "What about women?" He said: "Let it down a hand span." She said: "But then their feet will show." He said: "Then (let it down) a forearm's length, but no more than that."

She mentioned women's hems to the Messenger of Allah [SAW], and the Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: "Let it down a hand span." Umm Salamah said: "But that will uncover (her feet)." He said: "Let it down a forearm's length, but no more than that."

"‏ تُرْخِي ذِرَاعًا لاَ تَزِيدُ عَلَيْهِ ‏"

Authentic Sunan an-Nasa'i 5339

"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] was asked how much a woman should let her hem drag. He said: 'A hand span.' She said: 'But then it will uncover her (feet).' He said: 'A forearm's length, and no more than that.'"

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) gave licence to the Mothers of the believers (i.e. the wives of the Prophet) to hang down their lower garment a span. Then they asked him to increase it, and he increased one span for them. They would send (the garment) to us and we would measure it one forearm's length…
