حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، قَالَتْ سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ كَمْ تَجُرُّ الْمَرْأَةُ مِنْ ذَيْلِهَا قَالَ ‏

"‏ شِبْرًا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قُلْتُ إِذًا يَنْكَشِفَ عَنْهَا ‏.‏ قَالَ ذِرَاعٌ لاَ تَزِيدُ عَلَيْهِ ‏"

It was narrated that Umm Salamah said:

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked about how long a woman’s hem should hang down. He said: ‘A hand span.’ I said: ‘But then (her legs and feet) will be uncovered.’ He said: ‘Then a forearm’s length, but no more than that.’”

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan Ibn Majah

قَوْله ( كَمْ تَجُرُّ الْمَرْأَة ) ظَاهِر اللَّفْظ أَنَّ الْكَلَام فِيمَا يَقَع عَلَى الْأَرْض مِنْ ثَوْب الْمَرْأَة وَيَسْقُط عَلَيْهَا مِنْ ذَيْله لَكِنْ لَا يَظْهَر قَوْلهَا ( إِذًا يَنْكَشِف عَنْهَا ) فَلَعَلَّهُ كِنَايَة عَمَّا يَزِيد عَلَى ذَيْل الرَّجُل أَيْ قَدْرًا تَجْعَلهُ الْمَرْأَة زَائِدًا فِي ذَيْلهَا عَلَى ذَيْل الرَّجُل يَدُلّ عَلَى هَذَا الْمَعْنَى رِوَايَة أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ فِي أَبِي دَاوُدَ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَم ( إِذًا يَنْكَشِف عَنْهَا ) أَيْ مَا يَنْبَغِي سَتْره.…

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) gave licence to the Mothers of the believers (i.e. the wives of the Prophet) to hang down their lower garment a span. Then they asked him to increase it, and he increased one span for them. They would send (the garment) to us and we would measure it one forearm's length…

رَخَّصَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لأُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الذَّيْلِ شِبْرًا ثُمَّ اسْتَزَدْنَهُ فَزَادَهُنَّ شِبْرًا فَكُنَّ يُرْسِلْنَ إِلَيْنَا فَنَذْرَعُ لَهُنَّ ذِرَاعًا ‏.‏
