أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَامِرٍ الأَنْصَارِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ

كَانَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ إِذَا أَذَّنَ قَامَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَيَبْتَدِرُونَ السَّوَارِيَ يُصَلُّونَ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَهُمْ كَذَلِكَ وَيُصَلُّونَ قَبْلَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَ الأَذَانِ وَالإِقَامَةِ شَىْءٌ ‏.‏

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said:

"When the Mu'adhdhin called the Adhan, some of the Companions of the Prophet (S.A.W) would get up and rush to the pillars (in the Masjid) and pray until the Prophet (S.A.W) came out and they were like that. They would pray before Maghrib and there was nothing between the Adhan and Iqamah."

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan al-Nasa'i

قَوْله ( فَيَبْتَدِرُونَ السَّوَارِي ) أَيْ يَتَسَارَعُونَ وَيَسْتَبِقُونَ إِلَيْهَا لِلِاسْتِتَارِ بِهَا عِنْد الصَّلَاة ( وَهُمْ كَذَلِكَ ) أَيْ فِي الصَّلَاة يُرِيد أَنَّ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه تَعَالَى عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَرَاهُمْ وَيُقِرّهُمْ عَلَى تَلِك الْحَالَة وَلَا يُنْكِر عَلَيْهِمْ ( وَلَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْن الْأَذَان وَالْإِقَامَة شَيْء ) أَيْ وَقْت كَثِير يُرِيد أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يُسْرِعُونَ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ لِقِلَّةِ مَا بَيْن الْأَذَان وَالْإِقَامَة مِنْ الْوَقْت وَاَللَّه تَعَالَى أَعْلَم.…

I went to `Uqba bin 'Amir Al-Juhani and said, "Is it not surprising that Abi Tamim offers two rak`at before the Maghrib prayer?" `Uqba said, "We used to do so in the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)." I asked him, "What prevents you from offering it now?" He replied, "Business."

“I heard Anas bin Malik say: ‘The Mu ’adh-dhin would call the Adhan during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and one would think that it was the Iqamah because there were so many people who stood and performed the two Rak’ah before the Maghrib.”

إِنْ كَانَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ لَيُؤَذِّنُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَيُرَى أَنَّهَا الإِقَامَةُ مِنْ كَثْرَةِ مَنْ يَقُومُ فَيُصَلِّي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْمَغْرِبِ ‏.‏

I offered two rak'ahs of prayer before the Maghrib prayer (i.e. obligatory) during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I (narrator al-Mukhtar b. Fulful) asked Anas: Did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) se you ? He replied: Yes, but he neither commanded us nor forbade us (to do so).
