أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الْقَطَّانُ الرَّقِّيُّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، قَالَ قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَطَاءٌ، مُنْذُ حِينٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَخْبَرَتْنِي مَيْمُونَةُ، أَنَّ شَاةً، مَاتَتْ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏

"‏ أَلاَّ دَفَعْتُمْ إِهَابَهَا فَاسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِهِ ‏"

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas:

"Maimunah told me that a sheep died, and the Prophet said: 'Why don't you tan its skin and make use of it'?"

قَوْله ( أَلَا دَفَعْتُمْ إِهَابهَا ) هَكَذَا فِي نُسْخَتنَا مِنْ الدَّفْع بِالْفَاءِ وَالْعَيْن الْمُهْمَلَة أَيْ أَخَذْتُمُوهُ وَبَعُدْتُمُوهُ مِنْ اللَّحْم بِالنَّزْعِ عَنْهُ وَالْأَقْرَب دَبَغْتُمْ بِالْبَاءِ وَالْغَيْن الْمُعْجَمَة وَاَللَّه تَعَالَى أَعْلَم.…

Once Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) passed by a dead sheep and said to the people, "Wouldn't you benefit by its skin?" The people replied that it was dead. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "But its eating only is illegal."
