Narrator:Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ كَانَ عَلَى عُمَرَ

نَذْرٌ فِي اعْتِكَافِ لَيْلَةٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ فَسَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said:

"Umar had made a vow to spend a night in 'Itikaf in Al-Masjid Al-Haram. He asked the Messenger of Allah about that, and he ordered him to perform the 'Itikaf."

قَوْله ( فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ ) لَا مَانِعَ مِنْ الْقَوْل بِأَنَّ نَذْرَ الْكَافِر يَنْعَقِدُ مَوْقُوفًا عَلَى إِسْلَامِهِ فَإِنْ أَسْلَمَ لَزِمَهُ الْوَفَاء بِهِ فِي الْخَيْر وَالْكُفْر وَإِنْ كَانَ يَمْنَعُ عَنْ اِنْعِقَادِهِ مُنَجَّزًا لَكِنْ لَا نُسَلِّمُ أَنَّهُ يَمْنَعُ عَنْهُ مَوْقُوفًا وَحَدِيث الْإِسْلَام يَجُبُّ مَا قَبْلَهُ مِنْ الْخَطَايَا لَا يُنَافِيهِ لِأَنَّهُ فِي الْخَطَايَا لَا فِي النُّذُور وَلَيْسَ النَّذْرُ مِنْهُمَا وَاَللَّه تَعَالَى أَعْلَمُ.…

Ibn ‘Umar said that when ‘Umar consulted the Prophet about a vow he had made in the pre-Islamic period to spend a night in devotion in the sacred mosque, he said, “Fulfill your vow.” (Bukhari and Muslim.)

When we returned from (the battle of) Hunain, `Umar asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about a vow which he had made during the Pre-lslamic period of Ignorance that he would perform I`tikaf. The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered him to fulfill his vow.
