حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏

غِلَظُ الْقُلُوبِ وَالْجَفَاءُ فِي الْمَشْرِقِ وَالإِيمَانُ فِي أَهْلِ الْحِجَازِ ‏"

It is reported on the authority of Jabir b. Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah (may peace and, blessings be upon him) observed:

The callousness of heart and sternness is in the East and faith is among the people of the Hijaz.

Explanation in Arabic

ذكر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أن صفة قسوة القلب وفظاظتها من صفات أهل المشرق، وأن الإيمان من صفات أهل مكة والمدينة وما حولهما، ولا يلزم من ذلك نفي الإيمان عن غيرهم، كما لا يلزم منه نفي الرقة عن كل من كان في المشرق، فهذا حكمٌ أغلبي.

Jabir reported God's messenger as saying, "Harsh hearts and roughness are to be found in the east, but faith among the people of the Hijaz." Muslim transmitted it.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "From this side from the east, afflictions will appear. Rudeness and lack of mercy are characteristics of the rural bedouins who are busy with their camels and cows (and pay no attention to religion). Such are the tribes of Rabi`a and Mudar."
