حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ - قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ، مَوْلَى ابْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ كَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ حِينَ قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ يَجْتَمِعُونَ فَيَتَحَيَّنُونَ الصَّلَوَاتِ وَلَيْسَ يُنَادِي بِهَا أَحَدٌ فَتَكَلَّمُوا يَوْمًا فِي ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمُ اتَّخِذُوا نَاقُوسًا مِثْلَ نَاقُوسِ النَّصَارَى وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ قَرْنًا مِثْلَ قَرْنِ الْيَهُودِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ أَوَلاَ تَبْعَثُونَ رَجُلاً يُنَادِي بِالصَّلاَةِ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ يَا

بِلاَلُ قُمْ فَنَادِ بِالصَّلاَةِ ‏"

Ibn Umar reported:

When the Muslims came to Medina, they gathered and sought to know the time of prayer but no one summoned them. One day they discussed the matter. Some of them said: 'Let us adopt a bell like the bell of the Christians.' Others said: 'Or a horn like the horn of the Jews.' Then ʿUmar said: 'Why do you not appoint a man who will call the people to prayer?'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: O Bilal, get up and summon (the people) to prayer.

قَوْله : ( كَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ يَجْتَمِعُونَ فَيَتَحَيَّنُونَ الصَّلَاة ) قَالَ الْقَاضِي عِيَاض رَحِمَهُ اللَّه تَعَالَى : مَعْنَى يَتَحَيَّنُونَ يُقَدِّرُونَ حِينهَا لِيَأْتُوا إِلَيْهَا فِيهِ ( وَالْحِين ) الْوَقْت مِنْ الزَّمَان. قَوْله : ( فَقَالَ بَعْضهمْ : اِتَّخِذُوا نَاقُوسًا ) قَالَ أَهْل اللُّغَة : هُوَ الَّذِي يَضْرِب بِهِ النَّصَارَى لِأَوْقَاتِ صَلَوَاتهمْ , وَجَمْعه نَوَاقِيس , وَالنَّقْس ضَرْب النَّاقُوس. قَوْله : ( كَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ حِين قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَة يَجْتَمِعُونَ فَيَتَحَيَّنُونَ الصَّلَاة , وَلَيْسَ يُنَادِي بِهَا أَحَد , فَتَكَلَّمُوا يَوْمًا فِي ذَلِكَ , فَقَالَ بَعْضهمْ : اِتَّخِذُوا نَاقُوسًا , وَقَالَ بَعْضهمْ : قَرْنًا , فَقَالَ عُمَر رَضِيَ اللَّه عَنْهُ…

The people mentioned the fire and the bell (as means proposed for announcing the time of prayer) and by such a suggestion they referred to the Jews and the Christians. But Bilal was ordered, "Pronounce the words of the Adhan (i.e. call for the prayer) twice and the Iqama once only."
