Chapter: Hides of dead animals are purified by tanning

Authentic hadith of Sahih Muslim Sahih Muslim 364

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ النَّوْفَلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَطَاءٌ، مُنْذُ حِينٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ مَيْمُونَةَ، أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّ دَاجِنَةً كَانَتْ لِبَعْضِ نِسَاءِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَمَاتَتْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ أَلاَّ

أَخَذْتُمْ إِهَابَهَا فَاسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِهِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Ibn'Abbas reported on the authority of Maimuna that someone amongst the wives of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had a domestic animal and it died. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

Why did you not take off its skin and make use of that?

Reported by Muslim (No. 364).

Once Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) passed by a dead sheep and said to the people, "Wouldn't you benefit by its skin?" The people replied that it was dead. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "But its eating only is illegal."

مَرَّ بِشَاةٍ مَيِّتَةٍ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ هَلاَّ اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِإِهَابِهَا ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالُوا إِنَّهَا مَيِّتَةٌ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ إِنَّمَا حَرُمَ أَكْلُهَا ‏"
